Spoiler Alert!!! The Toronto Food Blog loves everything about at Isaan Der. The vibe, the food, the hospitality! Chef Ko and her team make the magic happen, North-East Thai style, in their bumpin’ open kitchen while Pete and the front-of-house staff make you feel right at home (in their home).
With locations in The Junction, Riverside and Richmond Hill, they’ve literally got the 6ix surrounded! We’ve dined here with friends, family, colleagues and clients. We’ve even had the pleasure of joining a lock-in lunch with the staff (served family style). Whatever your occasion, proceed with confidence:)
For starters, they have rolls of the fried & fresh varieties as well as satays for days!
But we typically like to kick things off with their salt & pepper squid. Crunchy and not the least bit oily, we’ll often get two for the table (especially if the Singhas are flowing).
It’s soup season in Thailand, and Ko’s taking her heirloom recipes to the next level. Usual suspects Tom Yum and Tom Cha both make an appearance.
But it’s the lesser-known Tom Saap that’s our favourite. Tamarind pork ribs in a clear umami-laden broth FTW!
Oodles of noodles you say?
For those of us who prefer a thicker gauge, Isaan Der does an absolute kickass Pad Kee Mao that’s bursting with veggies and the protein of your choosing (chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu). Perfection on a plate right there.
And let’s not forget the curry. Massaman Lamb Shank and Red Curry Duck are sure to please the more adventurous eaters. Thick and hearty and perfect for fall.
But the headline here is that Isaan Der’s Khao Soi is not to be missed. Chewy beef brisket & noodles two ways, floating in the zippiest coconut gravy. “Ain’t nothing goin’ on here but the rent!”
