It has been a few weeks between blog posts, loyal readers. This can be chalked-up to the fact that my wife and I have been in Mexico for the last little while. We were so impressed with one of our dining experiences in Playa Del Carmen that the restaurant had to grace this blog as the first ever “Out of Town” entry… Yeah, it was that good.
Babe’s Noodles and Bar has 2 locations in Playa Del Carmen, both across the street from Starbucks. They serve-up fresh Thai dishes that rival anywhere we’ve recently been in Toronto.
We started with the Spring Rolls and the Chicken Patties, both of which exceeded expectations. The Rolls were fried and were filled with a variety of fried Mushrooms and a crunchy julienne slaw of Carrot, Broccoli, Green Onion and Cucumber… not to mention a spicy Peanut Butter sidecar for dipping. The Patties were grilled Sliders of Ground Chicken, Green Onion and Cilantro, and were served with the House Soy Sauce (in case we needed an extra kick in the spice department).
Mains come in 2 sizes, and, after the starters, we were glad we shared a couple of half-sized noodle dishes. The Cashew Chicken was a mix of Chili, Garlic and Soy Sauces tossed amongst huge strips of Chicken Breast, Snow Peas, Cabbage, Peppers, Onions and Cashews. Served on a pile of Fresh Egg Noodles, this was my wife’s favorite dish of the past year. We also got a half-order of the Yellow Curry Chicken, again on Noodles. Though this had a similar combination of Meat and Vegetables, it was tossed in Coconut Milk and Yellow Curry, only to be topped with wedges of Grilled Pineapple. Add 3 Sol Beers and a the mother of all Margaritas for $50USD all-in, and it is easy to see why this was such a memorable dining experience.
The last time we were in Mexico, a friend of ours told us about Babe’s… but we never made it. This time, it was a mission… and well worth the excursion into town. Thanks for the directions, Steve.
For those of you heading down to Cancun or the Mayan Riviera any time soon for an all-inclusive holiday, take the time to visit Playa Del Carmen and Babe’s Noodles and Bar. The food, atmosphere and people-watching made it as much fun as we had on our entire trip.
