Best of Niagara!

Happy Canada Day!

We’ve spent a lot of time doing #weekendsinwinecountry lately…

And while Niagara gets painted as wineries and white tablecloths, that’s only half the story.  It’s an easy drive from the bump and grind of the 6ix.

The region stretches from Lake Ontario down to Erie… through canal towns, beach strips, fruit stands and blue-collar neighbourhoods where lunch matters a little more than appearances.

These are the places we’d send our friends. A definitive list that warrants further research.

—————————————–

Greasy Spoon @ Early Bird Restaurant (Thorold)

Some mornings don’t call for avocado toast. They call for eggs, toast, bacon and coffee poured before you even ask. Early Bird has been quietly getting people back on their feet for years… especially after a Saturday in wine country.

Breakfast Sandwich @ Brindle (Downtown St. Catharines)

We keep telling ourselves we’ll try somewhere else. We never do. It’s the peeps as much as the grub. Grab the breakfast sandwich, a proper coffee and watch downtown wake up.

Brunch @ The Diner House 29 (St. Catharines)

If someone told you one of Niagara’s best brunches was hiding inside a gas station, you’d probably laugh. Then you’d order the pancakes and stop laughing.

Donuts @ Cookies & More Bakery (Niagara Falls)

Walking through the front door feels like stepping back thirty years. That’s exactly why we love it. We usually lose a cruller before we’ve even made it back to the car.

Drip Coffee @ Black Sheep Coffee Roasters (Welland)

Good coffee doesn’t need a paragraph to explain itself. Black Sheep has been roasting its own beans in Welland for years, and the drip coffee is still what we order most often. Grab a cup, wander down to the canal and let the morning figure itself out.

Hot Dogs @ TJ Meats (StC Farmers’ Market)

Saturday belongs to TJ Meats at the StC Farmers’ Market. No fancy toppings. No reinvention. Just a great hot dog that somehow tastes even better standing up.

Family Restaurant @ Green Acres Family Restaurant (Fort Erie)

Every town has that one restaurant where three square meals all seem to happen under the same roof. In Fort Erie, it’s Green Acres. A place that’s been feeding the community for more than 60 years… and hopefully it keeps doing it for another 60.

Deli @ Your Deli (St. Catharines)

You Deli is the spot we visit the most on this list.  Currently a thrice-a-week habit for their best wvrst.  No curated charcuterie boards; no imported olive oils. Just a proper Polish deli where the slicer never seems to stop. #lunchunder10bucks all day long. That’s right… all the pickles!

Grocery Store @ Big Red Market (Thorold)

Before the big grocery chains figured out “local” was a marketing strategy, places like Big Red were already doing it. We stop in for the butcher counter… and somehow always leave with a bag full of salads, dips, and things we never planned on buying. That’s half the fun.

Hot Table @ Antipastos (St. Catharines)

Tucked away in an industrial pocket off Martindale, this is the kind of place locals quietly rely on. Sometimes you don’t need reservations or a tasting menu… you just need a good hot table. Grab whatever looks best that day and don’t overthink it. Prepared & specialty foods galore.

Korean @ Cho’s Snack (StC Farmers’ Market)

The lineup tells you everything you need to know. Buy more than you think you’ll need… future you will appreciate it.

Jamaican @ Miss Pauline’s (StC Farmers’ Market)

The Jerk Chicken keeps bringing us back, and their patties are handmade & fresh-baked every Saturday morning. One of those places that feels more like someone’s home than a business. Sneaky-good catering option, too.

Chinese… Sichuan @ Chengdu Noodles (Niagara Falls)

We’ve dragged more than a few friends here over the years. Every single one has looked up halfway through the meal wondering why nobody told them sooner. This is the restaurant we eat at the most.

Chinese… Canadian Style @ Far East (Niagara Falls)

It’s authentic Southern Ontario Chinese food… and you can actually taste the wok hei.

Vietnamese @ PhoMily (St. Catharines)

Every town deserves a Vietnamese restaurant that doesn’t water itself down. This is ours. Order the tripe salad if you’re feeling adventurous… or don’t. More for us.

Filipino @ Pinoy Grill (St. Catharines)

The portions suggest they think you skipped breakfast. We usually leave with tomorrow’s lunch… completely by accident.

Afghan @ Hewad Kabob (Downtown St. Catharines)

You can smell the charcoal before you reach the counter. That’s usually a good sign.

Greek @ George’s Greek Village (St. Catharines)

The canal outside almost makes you forget you’re in St. Catharines. Almost. Order the lemon soup and settle in. As close to the Danforth as you’ll get in Niagara,

Indian @ Apna Parivaar Indian Restaurant (St. Catharines)

This feels like somebody’s family kitchen accidentally became a restaurant. Big, unapologetic flavours… heavy on the vegetables. One of Niagara’s best hidden gems.

Shawarma @ It’s About Thyme (Downtown St. Catharines)

Half the fun is chatting with buddy behind the counter. The other half is figuring out how to eat one of those wraps without wearing it home.

Trini @ Niagara’s Sweet & Spicy (Niagara Falls)

Auntie in the back knows her sh*t. Don’t be shy with the chutneys. It’s tradition in Port of Spain to order more than one Doubles.

Sushi @ Dani Sushi (Beamsville)

Wine country isn’t exactly where you’d expect to stumble onto some of Niagara’s best sushi… which is probably why we keep coming back. It’s takeout only, BOG pricing compared to the 6ix, and a total hidden gem!

African @ Asanka (St. Catharines)

The first time we ate Ghanaian food, we realized how much we’d been missing. Rich stews, smoky spice, slow=cooked meats and starches built to soak up every last bit of flavour. Asanka is the kind of place that quietly expands your definition of comfort food… and that’s exactly why we keep looking for meals like this.

Guyanese @ JP’s Roti House (Welland)

Seeeeeeeeeeeeen!

Ceviche @ Patty’s Delights (Niagara Falls)

It’s tucked away enough that you could drive past it for years. We almost did. Thankfully somebody smarter than us pointed the way. Salt-of-the-earth mom & pop. As fresh as The Falls gets.

Tacos @ Mexican Taco Zone (Welland)

You can usually tell if a taco shop is worth your time before you even order. Listen to the room. A modified food truck full of migrant workers. This place has the right soundtrack.

BBQ @ Backroad Barbecue Company (Port Colborne)

Somebody decided Niagara deserved proper barbecue and went all-in. Order whatever came off the smoker first… with all the fixin’s.

Burger @ The Burgh (Thorold)

This burger doesn’t care about Instagram. Neither do we. Oklahoma for the win. Eat in the adjoining Pub if you;re thirsty. Ask for napkins.

Subs @ Archie’s Subs (Port Colborne)

The definition of generosity… slammed into a footlong dagwood. A small-town legend!

Chip Truck @ Vok’s Den (St. Catharines)

We weren’t looking for dill pickle poutine. Now we’d notice if it disappeared.

Butcher Shop @ Lakeshore Meats (Port Dalhousie)

A proper neighbourhood butcher shop is becoming an endangered species. Support this one while you still can. Weekend BBQ out front worth the stop. Try before you buy;)

Winery Food @ Honsberger Estate Winery (Jordan Station)

Wine country doesn’t always need to be fancy. Bring the kids, stay for lunch and don’t look at your watch.

Brewery @ Cold Break Brewing (St. Catharines)

There are plenty of breweries making good beer these days. Cold Break gives you a dozen or so reasons to stay for another pint. Work your way through a flight… then order the fried chicken sandwich. We’re comfortable calling it the best in town.

#FridayPizzaNightWithTheGirls @ BarrelHead (Niagara on the Lake)

Friday nights have developed a rhythm around here. Pizza, Niagara wine. live music and a patio that reminds us why we keep making the drive. This is how NOTL does casual.

Italian @ The Valley Restaurant (Port Weller)

Some recipes aren’t meant to change. Thankfully nobody here seems interested in fixing what isn’t broken. Handmade pasta… to-order.  #IYKYK

Family Style @ Rizzo’s House of Parm (Crystal Beach)

This isn’t first-date food. It’s pass the plate, steal a meatball and wonder why nobody opened another button on their jeans. Matty Matheson’s hometown gem.

Steak Dinner @ Fat Rabbit (St. Catharines)

Choosing your steak from the butcher case and then returning to your seat feels strangely satisfying. They do the rest.

Date Night @ OddBird (Downtown St. Catharines)

Our favourite dinner service in town. This is where you go when you want to get to second base.

Wine Bar @ Twenty (Downtown St. Catharines)

Grab the window if it’s available. Stay longer than you planned. Where the chef’s go after work.

Vibes @ Bar Les Incompetents (Downtown St. Catharines)

Some dining rooms just have “it.” This is one of them. We’d happily sit here with a mocktail even if the kitchen wasn’t open.

Prix Fixe @ Treadwell Cuisine (Niagara on the Lake)

Prix fixe can sometimes feel a little too choreographed. Not here. The menu changes with the season, almost everything comes from nearby farms, and somehow every course feels like it belongs exactly where it is. This is one of those meals that reminds you why Niagara became a food destination in the first place.

Pub Grub @ The Merchant Ale House (Downtown St. Catharines)

A pregame tradition for a lot of people in town. The beer gets the headlines… the food deserves more attention than it gets.

Patio @ Trust Beer Bar (Downtown St. Catharines)

If you know where the patio is, you’ve probably become a regular already. If not… now you know. Head just of the main drag and bring your sunnies.

Chef’s Table @ Restaurant Capelin (Downtown St. Catharines)

Watching a small kitchen work is a bit like watching live music. There’s nowhere to hide. They don’t need to. A splurge dining experience. that’s worth every twonie.

Fine Dining @ Restaurant Pearl Morissette (Jordan Station)

People talk about the reservation. We talk about how relaxed it feels once you’re there. Top three restaurant in North America for a reason.

Tourist Trap @ The Lake House (Lincoln)

Every long weekend somebody asks us if it’s worth it. We’ve stopped answering. We just tell them to go. Great view, bustling dining room, enormous portions.

Wings @ Romby’s (St. Catharines)

Wing debates are almost a Niagara sport. We’re planting our flag here. They smoke ’em. You can taste it.

Butter Tarts @ 13th Street Winery Bakery (Jordan)

Everybody has a favourite butter tart. This is ours… and we’ve done enough “research” to be comfortable saying it.

Cinnamon Buns @ Four Seasons Bakery (Welland)

Some cinnamon buns try too hard. These don’t. They’re soft, generously spiced and so messy that you’ll need a napkin before your first bite. Oldest-of-schools bakery… in the best possible way.

Soft Serve @ Canalside Cones (St. Catharines)

A melting twist cone beside the Welland Canal feels like childhood… even if your knees remind you otherwise. They use real cream. You can totally tell.  Take our money!

Ice Cream @ Avondale Dairy Bar (Niagara on the Lake)

Every Niagara kid seems to have an Avondale story. The ice cream’s still made on site, the line still snakes out the door on summer evenings, and somehow it tastes even better knowing the dairy farm is right behind you. Some traditions don’t need improving.

——————————–

Niagara is easy to underestimate!

People see vineyards, tour buses and tasting rooms. We see family businesses, strip plazas, farmers’ markets and people who have quietly been feeding their neighbours for decades.

Those are the places we keep coming back to. We hope you will, too, on your next roadtrip.

Happy Canada Day, everyone… and if you think we’ve missed a Niagara hidden gem, please come find us over at @torontofoodblog. We’ll happily do the research.
