When it comes to Israeli food in the north end of the city, it’s safe to say that Me Va Me is one of the more popular destinations. Having eaten there a number of times, at various times of day, with numerous people, the most memorable thing was often the same thing: bad service. As such, I asked a colleague who lives in the hood for an alternative (and I’m glad I did). The answer… Mr. Combo. Comparable food, served in a smaller dining room equates to better service and a better overall dining experience. We quickly found out that there’s much more to this Russian/Jewish family restaurant than just its intriguing name.
Knowing our audience, my wife and I started by ordering a small Combo Salad ($7.95), which turned out to be more than enough for 2 people. Fresh-baked Pitas are accompanied by a plate of Marinated Mushrooms, Pickled Beets, Coleslaw, Stewed Eggplant, Baba Ganoush, Tahini and Hummous. A meal in itself, my wife and I were so satisfied with the Combo Salad, we contemplated cancelling our main courses.
No sooner had we finished, a couple of mammoth Chicken Schwarmas ($5.95) were presented to us. Stuffed with Grilled Chicken, Israeli Salad (diced Tomato, Cucumber and Red Onion), Tahini, Hummous and the House Hot Sauce, we were quickly reminiscing about the last time we had such a good Schwarma. Neither of us could remember.
If you are north of the 401, there are obviously lots of great places to eat. Even if you aren’t up that way, may I suggest that Mr. Combo will make it well worth the trip. If you like Me Va Me, please try this place out and let me know your thoughts. Shopping at Yorkdale will never be the same with this place so close. My wife and I thank-you for the recommendation, Sherry.
