Having finally moved into a new house on the Danforth,  my wife and I recently found ourselves looking for a new local place for Chinese delivery. Since we lived on the Danforth before, we remembered the Chinese restaurant next to Square Boy at Jones Ave. named Danforth Dragon. This place stuck in my memory because its “DD” initials and, more importantly, because of its Hakka menu (a combination of Indian flavours atop Chinese favourites). Let’s just say that Danforth Dragon has been added to our speed-dial for future deliveries.

The house recommended trying their biggest-selling combination of dishes. The Crispy Ginger Chicken ($9.99) saw about a dozen pieces of lightly-breaded Chicken get tossed in a Garlicky Dry Rub and then deep-fried until crunchy. It was paired with the Hakka Chow Mein ($9.95)… a monstrous serving of Homemade Noodles tossed with Shrimp, Chicken, Shredded Onions, Carrots, Cabbage, Green Onion & Bean Sprouts, and then stir-fried in a mild Hakka Spiced Sauce. This dish is available sans meat as well.

For the Vegetable dish, the Jeera Green Beans ($8.95) were sautéed in Onions, Cumin, Dry Red Chilli, Green Chilli, Sesame Seeds & Green Onion. This extremely spicy Hakka dish is an absolutely fantastic way to get your daily serving of vegetables.

Now, history would suggest that Danforth Dragon’s style of Hakka cooking resonates from Chinese restaurant owners living in India… rather than the traditional dishes of the Hakka people in South-Eastern China. All I know is that with so many interesting dishes on the menu (including Pakoras, Butter Chicken and Manchurian Beef), I’m looking forward to dining-in as well as ordering a lot more delivery.
